Subsection 04 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The following chart is provided to help diagnose the probable source of troubles. It should be used as a
guideline. Some causes or corrections may not apply to a specific model.
SYMPTOM STARTER DOES NOT TURN.
CONDITION NORMAL USE
1. Check fuse.
a. Burnt fuse.
Check wiring condition and replace fuse.
2. On (SDI models), check sensors, ECM or MPEM.
a. Faulty sensors or defective ECM or MPEM.
Using BUDS software, check faulty codes and diagnose all components. Repair defective part.
3. Check battery charge.
a. Discharged or disconnected battery.
Recharge battery and check charging system and wires.
4. Check ground.
a. Poor, or corroded ground contacts.
Check, clean and tighten.
5. Check continuity of starter switch contact points.
a. Poor contact of starter switch contact points.
Repair or replace switch.
6. Check continuity between starter switch and solenoid on (fan-cooled models) or between starter switch
and MPEM on (
liquid-cooled models).
a. Open circuit.
Repair.
7. On (liquid-cooled models), check continuity between MPEM and solenoid switch.
a. Open circuit.
Repair.
8. On (SDI models), check relay no. 1.
a. Poor connection or defective relay.
Clean, reconnect and/or replace.
9. Check starter solenoid.
a. Inadequate connection (too much resistance) or defective solenoid.
Clean, reconnect and/or replace.
10. Check starter.
a. Inadequate connection (too much resistance) or defective starter.
Reconnect and/or replace.
TEST/INSPECTION
11. Check engine problems.
a. Damaged engine.
Check and repair.
